Hang in There..Huh???

October 19th, 2015

"Hang in there".... How many times have you heard that? Or maybe said it to someone, or texted it? It"s common, it's easy and it"s pretty much USELESS. Think about it, if you are going through something that is making you feel like you can't do it alone, or you want to give up, or you can't see the light at the end of tunnel, how really helpful is "hang in there"?

I realize in uncomfortable situations people genuinely don't always know what to say, it isn't that they are uncaring, they are trying. We have all been in situations where words just didn't come and we struggled to know how to help. I want to encourage you to take it a step further and then maybe you will actually create change for yourself, or someone else. Saying "hang in there" suggests you are hanging by a thread that is about to break, or maybe off the edge of a cliff, ya, picture that; You are hanging on gripping with all your might as sweat drips down your face, you have a thick root firmly in your grasp and you are reaching and holding on with all you can trying to not let go. You are exhausted and feel like you have nothing left you need someone to help, anyone.... and then "ding" someone shoots you a text that reads..... "hang in there". Really??

Pajama Party

October 13th, 2015

I can't seem to stress enough about how important clear thinking will be to your success and the accomplishment of your goals. Where you mind goes, is where your body follows. What I meant by that statement is that before you can get your body where you want it to be, you need to get your mind where it needs to be. Everything we do is first started in our minds. We have a "program" that runs in us all the time and we think, and have feelings and this impacts our actions and all of those things in the end will be our results.

We all know those days where our mind is tuned in, our goals are set, then our feelings are supporting that momentum. All of a sudden we ....

Best Exercise Strategy for YOUR Sucess

October 13th, 2015

When choosing an exercise program here are a few ideas to keep in mind.

Convenience

Look at your life style and current commitments. Going to the gym works for some people, but others need to find a way to fit exercise in to their day without having to travel. You may find that doing something at home --- at least to get you started works quite well. There is a lot you can do in a very limited space. Making exercise a part of your routine will be easier if you keep it simple. If you are somewhere where you can just lace on shoes and get out the door for a walk or jog then use that. If you have access to fitness equipment in your home then take advantage of it. If you work, or stay-at-home the challenge is to find the time of the day when it will best fit into your schedule, for me, that means the earlier the better. The later in the day I schedule my workouts the more opportunity for other people, demands of life and things to get in the way. Look at your daily schedule and your options and choose to make time for your health. Out of all the things we invest our money and time into what is truly more important than your own health?.....

Diet Coke and the Easy Button

October 13th, 2015

It's been a while since I posted and I think I'm over-due. I now have a few years under my belt as a personal trainer and I also have worked part-time in a Physical Therapy Clinic. For whatever reason I am a continuously curious person. I am a student of the world around me and the people I meet each day. I learn from them and hopefully I teach something useful once in a while also. If I could reach people today with one message it would be to face the truth and stop making excuses while you still have the opportunity to do something about it. What do I mean?

Apples to Apples

October 13th, 2015

We do it constantly, we compare our clothes, our homes, our jobs, our cars and even our bodies. We look in the mirror and don't like what we see and begin a negative, personal, internal rant that does nothing but leave us feeling even worse as we walk out the door for the day. Would you talk to your best friend the way you really talk to yourself sometimes? All of these things have something in common... negative results.

By comparing ourselves to others we either get lofty in our thinking and elevate ourselves above other people, or we get jealous and filled with negative thoughts. This is not the way to motivate yourself to be the best you can be.....

Running on Empty

October 12th, 2015

Running on Empty

I started this blog not sure if anyone would actually read it. I felt I had something to say and started typing. Maybe it was the timing, maybe something else but there were people who read it and NEEDED to hear it. I received emails, notes and even a phone call because of this blog --- and for a day it sort of knocked me down a bit I was taken back by the response. I then realized once again... people NEED people. We need to be heard, we need to be encouraged, we need to reach out and we need to let people in.

I read a quote today that said, "There is no life as empty as the self-centered life".... I chewed on that bit and thought, it's true. The good days no matter how great they are, if we are focused only on ourselves we will end up alone with no one to share them with. The bad days, they always come, and if we have lived to only fulfill our needs, our wants without taking the time for other people we again find ourselves alone when we need someone the most.

If you are running on empty today, if you feel like your problems are about to overtake you or your just down, I have found something that always works. Take yours eyes off of you, find one person to help, to do something kind for, to say something encouraging to.. anything. There is a world of hurting people who all have a story, all have pain, all have needs and if we each reached out to one person today that would make a difference. In the process of looking outside of your own problems, sometimes they start to fade and what seemed so overwhelming is not the giant mountain it once was. There is strength in giving, and being that listening ear. There is reward in looking outside of your own world.

In my next blogs I will be talking about setting goals, but even the best goals are not going to make up for a lack of connection with the people in our life. See if today you can make someone else's day just a little better. You sometimes never know what a big impact even a few, small, typed words will make.

Make today count!

Secret to Sucess

October 12th, 2015

Secret to Sucess

Failure....... Who likes that word.? Not me! No one likes to have a goal and fall short, or blow an opportunity. It doesn't feel good, to put it mildly, and if you have a very competitive personality like I do then it can eat at you for quite a while. Failure can teach us many things but I think the biggest lesson is one of perseverance, of not giving up on your goal, your dream, your diet.......whatever it is.

There are set backs, there are times we don't hit the mark but the only time we are truly failures, in my opinion, is when we give up. If you have a bad day and things don't go as planned, or you don't live up to your expectations take it for what it is and then LET IT GO! Don't let one bad day of poor eating convince you to quit, or that you will fail tomorrow --- that day hasn't even been written yet! The greatest thing about waking up each morning is it is a brand new day. When the sun comes over the horizon the slate is clean, history has not been written and you are once again in a place where you can make choices, perhaps better choices than the day before.

The greatest successes on this planet have "failed" over and over and what they all have in common is they got up the next day with perseverance and pressed on. The life lesson is always the same, quiting is the failure---- making mistakes is not. All I am asking is that you change your perspective just a little. Focus on what you are going to do differently next time, set up a plan to succeed, work harder, or remove temptations that knock you off course. You don't have to conquer the whole world, you just have to get up the next day and do it better than the last.

I love this quote by Michael Jordan -

"I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed."

Did you catch that last sentence? If you have stumbled in your goals, if you are discouraged I am telling you that tomorrow is your chance to pick yourself back up and get back at. I am not saying it is easy and I know how it feels to be discouraged, but you choose if you want to stay there. If I could grab your hand and pull you back up to your feet I would. Don't let mistakes and bad days keep you down.

Whether you think you can or whether you think you can't, you're right." ~ Henry Ford

It is a new day- what you make of it is up to you!

Chocolate

October 12th, 2015

Chocolate like just about any food is okay in moderation, but when you "need" it to feel better, get through the day, or it becomes more of an obsession then you may need to reel yourself back in, especially if you are looking to lose weight and tone up.
